Summer Reading Adventure 2019

An Out-of-this-World Summer Reading Adventure

June 1 through July 31, 2019

LAUNCH PARTY Saturday, June 1, 11:00 to 3:00 pm!

An Adventure For Everyone

You are invited to join A Universe of Stories, this year’s summer reading adventure at the Bourbonnais Public Library. Visit the library any time we are open between June 1 and July 31—just stop by the front desk to join in the fun! This year we are offering three levels of summer gameplay.

Astronauts aren’t yet reading independently (generally up through Kindergarten). These young solar system explorers will track their reading time and complete mini-missions with stickers on a “travel to Mars” map. Astronauts can earn up to three special prizes if they finish their adventure!

Aliens are reading on their own (generally 1st through 6th grade). These extraterrestrial travelers track their reading time and completed side-quests with stickers on a journey through the galaxy they receive when they join. Aliens can earn up to three special prizes if they finish their adventure!

Androids teens and adults who submit raffle tickets which reflect time spent reading, attending library programs, and visiting our Little Free Library at Perry Farm. Eight stellar raffle prizes are up for grabs at the end of the summer, and weekly prizes will also be given away!

Why Summer Reading Is So Important

Reading is such an invaluable way for so many of us to relax, explore and escape. A Universe of Stories celebrates how books allow us to visit other people, places, eras and ideas. Take your summer reading adventure on the road while you vacation–we can show you how to download an audiobook or ebook from our free apps. Explore new authors and topics–we’re planning some great displays and always have recommendations. The calendar below details how packed our June is with programs for all ages–make the library part of your hot-weather plans!

Including reading (and listening to stories) in their summer schedule is especially important for children. A “summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains made during the previous school year. A Universe of Stories encourages reading for fun, which in turn can keep academic skills sharp, helping kids be more prepared when they head back to school. Your Bourbonnais librarians are always excited to assist families in selecting books for their children based on reading levels and interests.
